This is the best option for the replacement of missing teeth.

Actually implant is a titanium screw which is directly placed inside the alveolar bone and then crown is fixed over it which replaces the missing tooth.

The implant acts just like the root of the natural tooth. Implant adapts to the oral tissues as a natural tooth and once well accepted can perform all the functions like a natural tooth.

Implant placement is a surgical procedure which is done under local anaesthesia. The procedure requires about 30 – 60 minutes for depending on the site and number of the implants to be placed. In some cases where sufficient amount of bone is not present bone grafting procedures may be required. In case of upper back teeth sinus lift procedures are needed when the bone available is insufficient… Once the implant placement is done there's a waiting phase of 3 – 6 months (for the implant to get well accepted and adapted in the bone) after which crown is placed over that implant and you get back a functional tooth…

    Basically 3 type of Implants

    1) Single tooth implant:

In case of single missing tooth.

    2) Implant supported bridge:

In case of multiple missing teeth.

    3) Implant supported dentures and over dentures:

This is done in case of all missing teeth. Implant supported Fixed dentures are the ones in which multiple implant supported bridges are given and all teeth are replaced.

Implants supported over dentures are the ones in which 4-6 implants are placed in the alveolar bone (depending on the condition of the bone).

Even when implants are well integrated in the alveolar bone and are functioning for you properly, they need some care which includes maintenance of meticulous oral hygiene. For this twice daily brushing and flossing and once in a year professional cleaning are recommended. Implants and crowns being artificial are resistant to decay but need to be protected from the plaque which affects the gums and the periodontium and ultimately the implants. Thus regular dental visits and proper cleaning of oral cavity are mandatory.
